Psychiatric patients are least capable of protecting their rights because of their illness. Nurses deal with human rights issues daily, in all aspects of their professional role. To protect the patient rights, the nurses should be made aware of patients rights. The study was conducted to assess the effectiveness of structured teaching programme on knowledge regarding the human rights of mentally ill among staff nurses at selected hospitals of Mysore. A quasi experimental- non equivalent pre test - post test control group design was adopted for the study. Proforma for selected personal variables, structured knowledge questionnaire were developed to collect the information and teaching plan was developed for structured teaching programme. Non-probability convenient sampling technique was used to select 80 staff nurses, 40 in each experimental and control group. The findings of the study revealed that the structured teaching programme was highly effective educative method in improving the knowledge of staff nurses regarding the human rights of mentally ill. No significant association was found between the pre-test knowledge levels and selected personal variables of staff nurses except for exposure to any other educational programme on human rights of mentally ill.

Domestic spousal violence against women in developing countries like India is now beginning to be recognized as a widespread health problem impeding development. This study was conducted to assess the prevalence of domestic violence and compare the domestic violence among working and nonworking women and also to find out the association between selected demographic variables and Domestic violence of women. A descriptive study was carried out among 60 working and nonworking women, at a selected area in Varanasi. Participants were selected through convenient sampling. Data was collected through interview by using socio demographic proforma and structured domestic violence questionnaire. The result showed that the overall prevalence of domestic violence among women was 48(80%). Although, significant difference was not found in overall domestic violence scores with selected demographic variables like age, education, type of family, occupation of the working and non working women. Domestic violence was very common in rural area of Uttar Pradesh. Domestic violence in working women was high, so effective actions should be taken to stop domestic violence at no time.

Health is wealth. “There is no health without mental health”. A person with good mental health functions comfortably in the society. World Health Organization has identified schizophrenia as one of the ten most debilitating diseases affecting human beings. This study evaluated the effectiveness of the planned teaching programme on management of schizophrenia in the caregivers at N.S.C.B. Medical College and Hospital, Jabalpur (M. P.) India. A quasi experimental one group pre-test and post-test group approach was adopted. Sample size was 100. Simple random sampling method was used for the study. For this study, researcher developed two interview schedules, the first contains the socio-demographic variables of the subjects and the other contains 42 item structured knowledge questionnaires on management of schizophrenia to evaluate the change in the level of knowledge of the caregivers. The study depicted a significant increase in the knowledge scores obtained by the caregivers regarding the management of schizophrenia after exposure to planned teaching programme.

Caring for a relative with a psychiatric illness adds the burden of stress, both for the patient and the caregivers. The present study was aimed to assess the effectiveness of structured teaching programme on stress and coping strategies among primary care givers of patients with psychotic disorders. Pre experimental design was used and sample of 40 primary care givers were selected using purposive sampling technique. Level of stress and coping strategies were assessed and structured teaching programme was given. Post-test was done after one week. Results shown that mean pre-test and mean post-test stress score was 25.65 and 13.8 respectively and mean pre-test and post-test coping score was 30.8 and 47.48 respectively which was highly significant at 0.001 level. Hence structured teaching programme was effective in reducing stress and improving coping strategies of primary caregivers.

When any one or more of the sensory systems are defective and fail in sensing the stimulation from the environment, the meaningful interaction between the child and the environment is impaired. The appropriate stimulation of senses through play like activities helps the child to re-establish the relationship with the environment in a meaningful way. The objectives were to determine the effectiveness of sensory stimulation technique on sensory perception level. Quasi experimental pretest- posttest control group design was used. 60 mentally challenged children and their caregivers 30 each in experimental and control group was chosen from Manasa special school,Pamboor, Udupi district. Sensory stimulation techniques are administered using a validated set of items and techniques for direct stimulation of four senses (tactile, olfactory, visual and auditory). There was a significant increase of sensory perception after sensory stimulation technique (p <0.01). Sensory perception was independent of the variables like age, gender, duration of schooling and severity of mental retardation. (p >0.05). Thus it was concluded that the sensory perception of the mentally challenged children can be improved by giving sensory stimulation technique.

Adolescent suicide is increasing in India. Identification of suicide clues, depression signs, knowledge and attitude towards adolescent suicide prevention strategies is important for the school teachers to take part in preventing adolescent suicide prevention. A survey was conducted among randomly selected 90 high school teachers in rural and urban areas of Mangalore district. Data show that the teachers knowledge on suicide prevention is moderate (mean% 48), attitude towards suicide prevention is favorable (65%) however their depression signs identification and suicide clue identification scores were low (mean 40, 41%). It was also found that teachers reported knowledge and attitude were influenced by their years of experience, hence these attributes may be reinforced by suicide prevention education.

Somatoform disorder is characterized by physical symptoms that suggest a general medical condition but are not fully explained by this condition or by the direct effects of a substance or another mental disorder. Alexithymia is difficulty in experiencing, expressing, and describing emotional responses, which has been recognized as a major risk factor for a variety of psychopathological and medical conditions, including chronic pain, somatization, depression, and anxiety. Thus the present study focuses on the prevalence of alexithymia and its relation to somatization disorder in primary care setting. Total of 75 peoples who attended the Cholanakkanahalli health centre, Bangalore, Karnataka were surveyed with Socio Demographic data, Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ- 15) and Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS- 20). Result shows that 92% of the subject have somatization disorder and nearly two third of subject are either possible alexithymia or alexithymia & only 32% of them are non-alexithymia. There is a mild positive correlation exits between age and somatization disorder. There is no statistical significant association between study findings and selected socio demographic variables. This study concludes that there is no relationship between alexithymia and somatization disorder.

It is an explorative survey study to assess the depressive feelings experienced by 160 elderly clients above the age of 60 years living with their family members and its associated causative factors in selected villages of Dhemaji district, Assam. Major findings of the study revealed that the majority of the respondents were between the age group of 60-70 years (49.4 %), male (58.1), married (64.4%), belongs to joint family system (74.4), illiterate (45.6%), depends mainly on cultivation and other sort of business (61.9%). The mean depression score was 19.73±7.17 indicating negative skewness of -0.90 a total of 86.9% elderly were screened as depression whereas 25% of them were mildly depressed and 61.9% of them were severely depressed. Most frequently reported individual causative factors associated with elderly depression are economical problem (73.8%) which is followed by chronic pain (65.6%), loneliness (62.5%), lack of time spent of the children with elderly (61.3%), lack of involvement in work (55%) Geriatric Score has revealed no association with individual and familial cause while it is significantly correlated to social cause.

Mental disorders have profound implication on health and well-being not only the individuals with the disorder but also of their families and entire community. The explanatory survey study was conducted with the objectives to identify warning signs of mental illness among general population for early diagnosis and initiation of treatment, in the OPD setting of the selected hospital at metropolitan city. To identify the warning signs, self reporting check list with questionnaire regarding warning signs of mental illness was used. Data was collected from 300 subjects, by using purposive sampling technique. Result suggested that 166(55.3%) had normal mental health, followed by 84(28%) with mild degree of mental health deviation, 42(14%) had moderate mental health deviation and 8(2.7%) showed severe grade of warning signs. Subjects those with mild, moderate and severe grades of mental health deviation were referred to psychiatrist for clinical evaluation and diagnosis. Out of 134 subjects 61 diagnosed provisionally as various types of mental illness, treatment initiated and called for follow up.
