Emotional Freedom Technique-Importance in Nursing

Emotional Freedom technique was an effective tool in managing various psychological distresses, and optimizes emotional health. It was often overlooked due to skepticism of its result, No matter we have sound psychopharmacology and various psychological therapies to treat emotional problems, even EFT, simple tapping technique was found effective in treating various emotional issues like depression, anxiety, stress, addiction and many more if practiced by Nurses in clinical settings to adopt holistic approach to heal the emotional issues.

  Introduction Top

Nursing profession is one of the noble professions that serve the diseased, the disabled, the injured and the dying. It is also accountable for promoting the wellness of individuals, families, and communities in hospital and community settings. Nurses are actively involved in health-care research, administration, making policy and patient advocacy.[1]

Nowadays Holistic health-care systems getting a greater scope due to increased in lifestyle-related disorders, especially chronic and noncommunicable diseases.[2] It was universally accepted that single health-care system is not sufficient to fulfill all the health demands of advanced society. Apparently new and integrated health-care system is required to promote health policies and program in future.[3]

In 2016, The National Institute of Nursing Research proposed new Strategic plan which was drafted, after receiving inputs from clinicians, interdisciplinary researchers, and other experts globally, It involves two major areas, innovation promotion: Improve health through technology and Nurse scientists of 21st century: Innovative approaches for research careers, which encourages blending of complementary medicine in providing holistic approach care to health seekers.[4]

Founder of Burns Integrative Wellness Center Jennifer express that 'as most of the patients now looking for alternative therapies, “It's better to have alternative modalities along with conventional treatment to facilitate early recovery among patients with chronic illness”.[5] The article published by Dr. Indra also emphasizes to blend the complementary therapies and alternative medicine to provide holistic care in nursing. As of now, many literature portrays application of yoga, meditation, spiritual healing, reiki therapy, massage therapy, pet therapy, play therapy etc., however a unique technique, which re-channelize the energy disruption and removes the blockage in energy system known as emotional freedom technique (EFT) was least practiced by the nurses as per literature review this might be due to unawareness or skepticism of results.[6]

Gary Craig in 1990's developed EFT based on Roger Callahan work Thought Field Therapy, now which is known as Energy psychology. Gary Craig done extensive work to refine and simplify this approach, He finally developed the simple and efficient technique, which he made it available to public.[7] EFT is one of the successful interventions, proved effective in healing traumatic memories, phobias, anxiety, and other craving disorders. This involves simple technique, which can be practiced by any one irrespective of age, gender, religion, race, any time anywhere. EFT technique blends the cognitive reprocessing and acceptance with simple tapping results in rechanneling the energetic disturbance in the body. More than 65 odd articles published in peer-reviewed journals reports high efficacy rate of 98% in reducing psychological distress (anxiety, phobia, posttraumatic stress disorder) and physical distress (asthma, pain etc.,). However, this technique has come across a fair degree of incredulity within the health-care settings. Many of the nurses were unaware about this technique and its significance to provide holistic care to patients. EFT will be an effective instrument in the nurse's hands, who quest holistic approaches for healing wide variety of physical and psychological conditions along with conventional treatment.[8]

How emotional freedom technique works?

A form of alternative system of medicine was originated in china long back known as meridians-invisible pathways of energy that flows through the body, any blockage in the flow of energy, results in health issues. In this Chinese medicine, they identified 12 meridians, identified to be associated with the body organs such as the heart, lungs, spleen, kidney, liver, stomach, gall bladder, small, and large intestine.[9] This theory believes that, tapping on the meridians with fingertips; re-channelize the blocked energy flow, resulting in restoration of physical and emotional health.

How to start with tapping?

EFT involves simple tapping techniques, which involves the following procedure, [Figure 1] depicts the sequence of EFT procedure.

Identify the issue

This is the first step in EFT processes, in which person is asked to imagine the problem which need to be resolved. Need to be focused on single problem or issue at a time.

Test the initial intensity

Person is asked to rate the intensity of problem in scale ranging from 0 to 10, where 10 indicates worst and 0 indicates no problem.

The setup

As per the problem identified, person will be asked to setup a phrase with self-acceptance along with tapping.

For example, even though I am depressed because I lost my loved one/unemployment/exam failure/broke up/divorced/etc., it makes me sad and depressed and its 9 out of 10, I deeply and completely accept myself.

The sequence

Person is asked to tap on karate chop point (Base of the little finger, on lateral side of the hand), top of the head, beginning of eyebrow (above the nose and at the eyebrow beginning), side of the eye ball (bony prominence of later cantus of the eye ball), under eye (bony prominence under eye), under nose (between upper lip and bottom of nose), chin (between the lower lip and chin), collarbone (midpoint where first rib, breastbone, and collar bone meets). Under arm (10 cm above armpit), on the lateral side and next to base of the nail of thumb, index finger, middle finger, and little finger.

Test the intensity again

Person will be asked to rate the intensity of problem from 0 to 10 again and any shifts in the emotions will be observed.[8]

Emotional freedom technique benefits

Available literature reveals EFT is an effective in treating psychological distress like Post traumatic stress disorder,[10] stress and its risk factors,[11] Anxiety,[12] Physical abnormalities such as asthma, pain, seizure, and fibromyalgia. Anger symptoms,[13] Food craving and weight management,[14] Quality of life in the elderly,[15] reduction of fear regarding child birth among antenatal mother,[16] depression,[12] panic attacks, etc.


It cannot be administered to person required immediate medical and surgical interventions. Need to be administered cautiously among antenatal mothers. Appling EFT in children and physically challenged (without both upper extremities) will be limited. In case of fracture, EFT may not be effective, it cannot be recommended to cure AIDS, venereal diseases and any sort of communicable diseases. Nurse need to undergo basics of EFT training before administering it. EFT is an add on treatment, further more research need to be conducted to draws its efficacy.

The Emotional freedom technique is an alternative and holistic approach in the hands of nurses along with conventional treatment to restore energy blockage/ disruption and there by facilitate the healing among patients.
